What is Sensory Over-Responsivity?

Sensory Over-Responsivity (SOR) describes a condition of the nervous system characterized by outsized responses to stimuli. SOR is probably the type most people associate with SPD. You will probably hear therapists and others refer to Sensory Over-Responsivity as sensory defensiveness.

SOR is an aversive reaction to sensory stimuli that others perceive  as pleasurable or that stay below the “irritation radar.” Usually SOR is associated with the sense of touch. For example, most of us do not register the touch sensation from the seams of our socks or the tags on our shirts. Our bodies’ “touch” system has habituated to these sensations so they do not distract us as we go about our day. People who are sensory defensive to touch are so distracted by these sensations that they can be consumed by them and be unable to concentrate on anything else until the sensation is removed. That is why you hear stories about the tags being cut from the clothing of children who are sensory defensive.
